"Dorset" panelled oak mule chest with scratch carved geometric decoration, highlighted with black and red pigment, in original condition with very good patination, later lock plate and handles, some small repairs, English circa 1680.

comment: A known type of 17th century vernacular furniture, and stylistically similar to some early American chests. Mule chests are less common than coffers, especially with decoration to the drawer front.
